Welcome to Baileys Corner
We like to share with you the benefits of playtime among their own species.
We have to warn you that not all dogs like to play especially the older mature dogs and dogs that have never been socialized. All of our champion canine players have some degree of training and have been socialized with other dogs. Playtime should take place in a controlled environment with supervision.
Playtime has important benefits both mental and physical and it will teach them the essential skills they need to interact appropriately with other members of their own species. The prey drive for hunting skills, wrestling, tugging, chasing, stalking and stealing items away from their opponent, learning the rules on bites inhibition and appropriate play are just a few benefits. Dogs also use their mouths quite a bit during their interactions with each other which involves a lot of mouthing, or inhibited play-biting. This will also help curb behavioral issues in the long run. Where a bored dog may resort to destructive behavior or act out to burn off some of their pent up energy.
In group play sessions, even under the most watchful eye and supervision an unlikely incident is possible therefore you must be prepared to stop them before it reaches the danger zone.
Playtime is not breed specific as you can see in this video. What you must consider is the size of dogs playing unless all dogs are trained and have social skills Do NOT try this at home without seeking professional help as it can escalate to the danger zone.
It is during this playtime where they communicate with each other and set their own ground rules and boundaries as to how far they can pull and push each other and what they can get away with.
Most dogs will not last more than 15 or 20 minutes of vigorous play session which we can not give them as humans at the intensity levels they need to get them to much calmer state of mind. A tired dog is a happy dog.
In closing, important factors to remember are exercise, species appropriate food, routine health check ups and grooming are essential in keeping them healthy and happy.
